Nobody loses their marbles!

March 20, 2010

Amazing how you can take about 25 Scouts, give them some marbles and a shape on the floor, and off they go!  Where’s the electricity?  What if the marbles need to be recharged?  Where’s Mario?  Hah! Who needs modern gizmos!  Instead, tons of fun, and some amazing marble shooting!  Oh, and Den 2 Bears achieved their rank awards!  A great night!  (Send pix…)

A Little Mud Doesn’t Dampen Pack Spirit in Spring Campout 2010!

March 14, 2010

Pack 71 held its spring campout at Camp Oh Dakota in Burlington, WI.   This campout was held in a cabin, insuring a comfortable evening for all participants.  The campout started with a Flag Ceremony, followed by a bit of exploring by the boys.  Dinner consisted of Hot Dogs, Bratwurst,  Chips, Foulds Macaroni and Cheese and Chili.  Of course Hot Chocolate and Lemonade was consumed in large quantities.

Along with the normal campfire activities led by Cubmaster Robert,  Asst. Cubmaster Werdan and Den Leader Kacos lead a solemn ceremony where we retired a number of American Flags that flew at Soldier Field.   Mssrs. Werdan and Kacos explained the proper way to retire a flag and all the boys showed the proper respect throughout the ceremony.

After the campfire, the boys retired to the cabin for a DVD of Pixar Shorts, popcorn and some trail mix.  Lights out about 10:30 for the early wakeup on Sunday.  Breakfast consisted of scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, and leftover brats. A hike to the fort was led by Akelas Franz, Lenzi and Stahnke while the remaining leaders led the cleanup of the cabin.  The hikers discovered a few fox dens, deer scat and a deer skeleton.  They never did find the wild turkeys that were calling all morning, however.

All in all, a great time and a wonderful facility.

Every Last Drop of Camping

Pack 71 Delivers in its Quest to Feed the Hungry

March 14, 2010

The 2010 Scouting for Food Campaign was supported by Pack 71.  Each year, BSA asks all it’s scouts to drop off donation bags to their neighbors and pick them up the next week for delivery to local food banks.  While the dropoff is usually met with the normal complaints of all impatient children, the pick up of the bags usually leaves every boy with the realization that his efforts will insure that hungry families will have a meal.  Thanks for your efforts, boys!

No LeBron? No Shaq? No Problem!

March 7, 2010

Pack 71 had a strong contingent attend the Milwaukee Bucks/Cleveland Cavaliers game at the Bradley Center. About a week before the game, Shaq was injured and was out for the season. Right before game time, we heard that King James would be “resting.” While there was a bit of disappointment, the Scouts of Pack 71 decided to make lemonade. Lots of popcorn, soda and ice cream helps, of course. And a wonderful game and halftime show didn’t hurt either.

We did get a pic of LeBron, saw a hilarious hypnotist and some seriously acrobatic dunkers. Our Section (424) came close to winning a free burrito (lost our “tumbling dice” contest to section 419 on a coin flip… we both rolled 5’s!) After the game, everyone got to get on the floor for a free throw. A bit of a wait, but still a nice perk.

Got home late and tired. But was it ever worth it!

100th Scout Birthday helps the Cub Scout GROW

February 9, 2010

Just in case that punchline wasn’t heard loudly enough, there it is! What a great meal, entertainment, and company at our annual Blue & Gold banquet! The best part though was recognizing our Cub Scout’s achievements. As you know, many “go-see-it’s” and conversations happened for so many rank advancements to be earned. It’s a job well done, all around!

Riding in Style at the Pinewood Derby!

January 23, 2010

Thanks to a great group of volunteers let by Mr. V, and in spite of a technical difficulty or two, Pack 71’s Cub Scouts cheered their teams and cars with more energy than this Cubmaster ever thought possible! A fun night all around!

Bears Tour Foulds Pasta Plant

January 18, 2010

Thanks to a letter written by one of our Bears to the President of Foulds, a group of Bears visited the Foulds pasta plant in Libertyville! Tons of pasta, all shapes and sizes! What a great opportunity to see a Libertyville institution! They’re known for their high fiber-content pastas, and make the most popular Mac & Cheese in Israel! Who knew!

Webelos 2’s Crossover Ceremony Rocks!

January 13, 2010

Congratulations to our Webelos 2s who earned their Arrow of Light, and to those that crossed over into Boy Scouts! The joy of a job well done by our Webelos 2s shows us the challenges and opportunities available for Cub Scouts!

Service to Our Community in December

December 10, 2009

Thanks to all the Scouts who performed a service recognized by the Cubmaster Service Award, and to everyone who helped make sandwiches, set up the PADS shelter, write letters to soldiers, and fill Maristella stockings on our Pack Service night. Great work!
