WHO CAN JOIN?

Any boy who is willing to follow the Cub Scout Promise and the Law of the Pack and is in the first through fifth grades (or age 7, 8, 9, or 10) can join Cub Scouting.

Some Frequently asked questions:

Q: Why do boys join Cub Scouting?

A: Every Cub Scout probably has their own unique reason for joining.  For some, it's a good excuse to be with their friends.  For others, it's fun to do the activities at each level of Cub Scouting.  Some like the camping and outdoor activities.  Others enjoy the service projects and the good feeling they get when helping others.  For all of these reasons, Cub Scouting guides our boys to being strong men of character while they just have fun!

Q: When can my son start Cub Scouting?

A:When he is in the first grade or is age 7.

Q: Can my son begin Cub Scouts after the first grade?

A: Yes.  Boys may join in grades 1 through 4.  If joining after first grade, there would be some additional work to do at home to earn badges and gain some basic knowledge.  This can definitely be done and many boys in our Pack have done just that!

Q: Are uniforms mandatory?  Do leaders have to wear uniforms?

A: The boys are encouraged to wear uniforms. The boys have a sense of belonging when they are all in full uniform. If cost is an issue, the pack may have donated uniforms they can distribute.  For leaders, uniforms are not required but are encouraged.  Uniforms are typically worn to Den meetings, Pack meetings, and to Cub Scouting events.

Q: What's the typical meeting frequency and duration?

A: 2 meetings a month, for 1 hour each

Q: What costs are involved?

A: Pack dues are $45 for the 2004-2005 year.  Den fees may be $10 for the year.

Q: What are the red vests the boys wear?  How do the boys earn patches?

A: The red vests are called "brag" vests.  They hold all the patches the boys earn as they participate in pack or council events and activities.  Segments (small curved patches) may be earned when the scout participates in or completes an activity that does not count toward his rank or earn another patch.  There are several segments to identify a number of activities.

Q: Where can I get a copy of the Program Helps and How-to-Book?

A: The Scout store in Highland Park, located in the Northeast Illinois Council Office, has many of these items and much more.  See the Scouting Link for more information regarding the Northeast Council.  You might also try www.scoutstuff.org online.
